Cardiac surgery is a key medical and health specialty in Shandong Province. There are 2 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 tutors for master students and 8 postgraduates. The department is equipped with 2 Joustela cardiopulmonary bypass machines, 1 IABP, 1 ECMO, nearly 20 cardiac monitoring devices, 3 extracorporeal temporary pacemakers, 3 automatic defibrillation monitors, 3 real-time coronary blood flow monitors, blood cell reabsorbents, and advanced compound operating rooms. The Department has 43 open beds and the first-class laminar flow purification monitoring room in the world. The number of operations per year exceeds 400.

    Since 1994, more than 4000 cases of cardiac surgery have been completed, including minimally invasive atrial and ventricular septal repair, complex congenital heart correction, infant cardiac surgery, beating valve replacement, beating coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic arch replacement, large vessel replacement and other complex operations. The youngest patient is a 2.5 kg weight child with pulmonary atresia, the oldest patient is a 82-year-old patient with cardiac myxoma. Heart transplantation was successfully completed in 4 cases. In November 2004, the first single lung transplantation and atrial septal defect repair in China were successfully completed to treat Eisenmanger syndrome, which filled the gap in China.

    In 2009, the Department began to apply thoracoscopic technique to cardiac surgery. At present, 260 cases of total thoracoscopic cardiac surgery have been completed, including ventricular septal defect repair, atrial septal defect repair, atrial myxoma resection, mitral valve replacement, etc. For two consecutive years, the National Demonstration and Symposium on Thoracoscopic Cardiac Surgery was held. This is the first conference on the theme of "Application of Thoracoscopic Technology in Cardiac Surgery Diseases" organized by the Society of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery of the Chinese Medical Association. More than 200 cardiac surgeons from more than 100 hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guangdong and other provinces and cities participated in the conference. Total thoracoscopic atrial septal defect repair, ventricular septal defect repair, mitral valve replacement live demonstration of the whole process, was highly appreciated by the experts. In addition, a cooperation agreement has been signed between the research project of thoracoscopic cardiac surgery and the special fund project of the Ministry of Health under the auspices of Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital, which has made the cardiac surgery of our hospital a qualitative leap forward and become a well-known profession in China. It has also established the leading position of the thoracoscopic Technology of cardiac surgery in our hospital in China.

    In order to promote the progress of the subject, keep pace with the development of international cardiac surgery, and better serve the patients with heart disease in Liaocheng, the departments continue to send doctors to study. Hospitals for further study include Prince Charlie Hospital of Australia, St. Mary's Hospital of Canada, Fuwai Hospital of Beijing, Anzhen Hospital of Beijing and other famous heart centers at home and abroad.

    Diagnosis and treatment of diseases include: various congenital heart disease, large blood vessel disease, rheumatic or other causes of heart valve disease, aortic aneurysm and other large blood vessel disease, heart tumor, coronary heart disease requiring coronary artery bypass graft, constrictive pericarditis, arrhythmia and so on.

    Since 2007, the Department of Civil Affairs of Shandong Province has designated Liaocheng People's Hospital as a designated hospital for free operation for children with congenital heart disease, providing full free assistance for children with congenital heart disease under the age of 14 in poor families in the city. Including patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, pulmonary valve stenosis, tetralogy of Fallot and so on.

    In recent years, 10 scientific research achievements have been completed, including 3 Shandong Science and Technology Progress Award and 9 Liaocheng Science and Technology Progress Award. More than 70 papers have been completed, including 12 in SCI.

    The cardiac surgery of Liaocheng People's Hospital has developed into a leading cardiac surgery in our province.
